NYC Costume Racing
Another week missing the harbor buoy (Red #2) meant the Red #4 buoy was used, A day of light and variable Kona winds meant using the “S” course, which is a short 1.1 nautical miles, and entirely within the harbor. A single lap was raced, so the crews could be sure to reach the costume party in the clubhouse before dark. The observers on the mole were able to enjoy the coordinated costumes of the various crews during the race.
The start was exciting, with a near collision of three boats just before the start. Two boats did 720 degree penalty turns. The wind was light; the penalty turns consumed precious time. Kato, with crew costumed as Ninjas, jumped out to an early lead, which it defended throughout the race. The only real challenge was near the end of the race, when Weatherly closed to under a boat length…but Kato kept the lead to cross the finish line first. Weatherly, with a crew of only three (ghosts), finished second by a scant 22 seconds; Fast Company (in ballet costumes), less than a minute behind Weatherly, was third in PHRF.
In the club category, Speedy (globe trotters) finished first, Papa ‘Au (dressed in safari clothes) second, and OZone (gangsters) was third .
