Close racing in the start of the Gene Wells Memorial Series
Good clear start for all boats, some of whom had reefed their mains and chosen to fly a smaller headsail than normal because of the gusty winds that characterized the start of the race.
Rounding the windward mark of the first leg, in order, were: Kato, Fast Company, OZone, Bonjolea II, Weatherly, Papa A’u, Speedy and Iwa.
Rounding the windward mark of the second leg, Kato, Fast Company, OZone and Bonjolea II rounded within 3-4 boat lengths of each other. Weatherly, Papa A’u, Speedy and Iwa, in that order were in a second grouping 10-12 boat lengths behind. Bonjolea II and OZone seemed to be in a race for 3rd, but OZone eventually won out.
At the windward mark of the 3rd leg a right of way infraction occurred between Speedy and Papa A’u. Speedy did a penalty turn, but protested Papa A’u. Papa A’u elected to retire after the finish of the race.
Kato and Fast Company were very close the entire race, exchanging the lead several times with Kato securing a close win at the finish.
The order of finish was: Kato, Fast Company, OZone, Bonjolea II, Weatherly, Papa A’u, Speedy, and Iwa.
