Fast Company beats the tie and wins the Junior Invitational Series
It was the fourth and final race of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Junior Invitational Race Series, and the boats were assembled behind the start line with their young crews ready to compete. Fast Company skippered by Jim Saylor was the points leader going into the race, but Kato, OZone and Papa a’u were each within reach to become the series winner if the winds were in their favor.
The northerly winds were definitely in Bonjolea II’s favor because they scored the best start followed by Papa a’u and Kato. OZone, Fast Company, Weatherly, and Speedy were following close in their wake. Bonjolea II tacked onto port and passed close to the end of the breakwater on her way to the Lighthouse buoy leading the pack.
The winds were consistently inconsistent as Kato took the lead coming back into the harbor but lost her lead in the wind shadow surrounding the Kalapaki Buoy. As they sailed past the mole to the leeward mark, it was Bonjolea II followed by Kato both well in the lead of Trinity, OZone, Fast Company and Papa a’u. The course took them out once again to the Light House buoy during which Bonjolea II just couldn’t shake off Kato, the smaller boat. By then the winds had settled down the normal tradewinds, and everyone enjoyed a quick downwind sail into the harbor.
It was Bonjolea II that finished first, but corrected out to 5th place with 1:21:52. Kato finished next and scored first place with a time of 1:17:47 corrected. Papa a’u corrected out at second place with a time of 1:20:16. OZone was right behind her and scored third place with a time of 1:20:52. Fast Company came in fourth with a corrected time of 1:21:52.
For the series, Fast Company and Kato were tied with the lowest points (9pts.); however, Fast Company took first place honors because her total score had more first place finishes compared to Kato. OZone (10pts.) took home the third place trophy.
For the race, Club Class had Weatherly taking first place with a corrected time of 1:15:24. Speedy finished in second place with a corrected time of 1:16:44, and Bonjolea II finished third with a time of 1:18:46. For the series, it was Weatherly (10pts.) taking the first place trophy, Speedy (15pts.) taking the second place trophy, and Papa a’u (20pts.) taking the third place trophy.
