FAST COMPANY DOES IT YET AGAIN!
For the sixth time in a row, Fast Company has taken a first place in the 7 race Rum Series. Since there is one throw out race, this means that Fast Company doesn’t even have to do the last race to win the series. However, skipper Jim Saylor says that of course they will be out there racing next Thursday (undoubtedly looking for the sweep!). The 5.8 mile course again had the boats rounding the green #11 buoy to avoid the dredging equipment in the harbor. With less than 12 knots of wind the boats had their large #1 jibs up.
Papa Au and Ozone started on port tack but Fast Company with right of way on starboard tack took an initial lead and never looked back. Kato and Ozone fought for second place with Kato taking the lead at the downwind #11 buoy with a tighter inside mark rounding. Double Espresso, the latest Olson 30 in the fleet, had the adult sailing students who are getting better each week. They hounded Ozone staying close on their tail. Papa Au had Ray back on foredeck with 12 stitches in his knee from last week when he climbed up the mast to get a wayward halyard. Weatherly and Speedy, 2 of the 6 Olson 30 fleet, added to the competition along with Bonjolea II the Sydney 36 (which always seems to do better in heavier air).
At the finish it was Fast Company in first place (again) with a PHRF corrected time of 1:09:06. Kato was second at 1:11:31 and Ozone third at 1:12:23. In club class it was Papa Au in first, Double Espresso in second and Speedy in third.
Jackie from Fast Company cooked up a delicious and healthy meal of chicken and rice soup, coconut carrot soup, homemade bread and a mixed green salad.
The 7th and final race of the Rum Series will be held on Thursday 5/16/19 with a 5 pm start. The public is invited to watch from the Nawiliwili jetty parking lot.
