FAST COMPANY IS BACK!!!
The Nawiliwili Yacht Club Spring Series #1 sailboat race was held on Valentine’s Day in strong gusty winds. The course was out to the Ninini Lighthouse buoy and back to the #11 buoy near the Coast Guard station. Two laps were raced over a distance of 4.8 miles. Fast Company, the Olson 30 skippered by Jim Saylor, had a great start and led the fleet. Papa Au the Express 27 who had easily won the opening day series, was over the starting line early before the starting signal and so they had to turn around and restart which cost them a lot of time. Kato, skippered by Kevin Millett, tried to catch Fast company by hoisting their spinnaker. However, in the strong gusty winds the spinnaker wrapped itself into an hourglass shape and Kato had to settle for second place behind Fast Company. In third place was the Olson 30 Ozone, followed by Papa Au, Speedy and Iwa. Several of the boats had an exciting downwind ride by surfing the very large waves.
A Valentine’s dinner of chili with a dessert of red velvet cake was provided by Kato.
The public is invited to watch the second Spring Series Race on Thursday 2/21/19 at the Nawiliwili Harbor jetty parking area starting at 5 pm.
