Great Conditions for Offshore Race 2
The offshore race was sailed on Saturday 4/10/21 to Ahukini and back. Only the Sydney 36 Bonjolea II and the Olson 30 crew of Speedy (using Double Expresso) raced. It was a beautiful day and by the 10 am start the wind had shifted from the Northwest to the Northeast. The wind also built from almost nothing up to 10-12 knots. Speedy started on starboard tack and Bonjolea II on port. Bonjolea II ducked Speedy but took the lift at the breakwater and at the next crossing they were ahead. Speedy stayed close behind and a little to weather all the way out past the lighthouse. Bonjolea II tacked essentially on the lay line to Ahukini and Speedy, trying to gain, tacked at about the same time but closer to shore. Speedy later had to tack back offshore and that cost them. In addition it looked like their jib might have come loose as there was a crewman on the bow for awhile apparently trying to fix things. At Ahukini skipper Bonnie Tiffany dipped the boat down into the harbor nicely with the stern beyond the end of the breakwater, and then she tacked back out of the harbor. As the boats passed one another going in opposite directions they waved to each other. On Bonjolea II with the asymmetrical spinnaker up and trimmed nicely by John Ross the boat hit 9.6 knots in about 12 knots of wind. Near the lighthouse buoy the asymmetrical spinnaker was flawlessly gybed and the boat sped back into the harbor finishing at 11:22 am, about 7 minutes ahead of Speedy. It was just a beautiful day.
