John Bertrand Memorial Series Races 2 and 3

John Bertrand Memorial Series Races 2 and 3

DSC_9885_2_1024On April 12, although the sky was not fair, the winds were. As was the case the previous week, 9 boats eagerly faced off at the starting line. A bit too eagerly, in fact…the race needed to be restarted due to several boats which were over the starting line early. DSC_10084_2_1024The restart saw Kato move out to a quick lead with the other Olson 30s – OZone, Fast Company, Speedy, and Weatherly – and Lelele, all in hot pursuit. The race was tight…the first and third place finishers were only a minute and 8 seconds apart. At the end, Kato finished first in PHRF, with OZone and Fast Company in second and third places.
DSC_10016_2_1024In club class (with different handicaps from PHRF), the trimaran Trinity finished first, followed by Lelele in second, and Weatherly in third.

The John Bertrand Memorial Rum Series Race #2 results:

PHRF (Open)
1. Kato
2. Ozone
3. Fast Company

Club (Open)
1. Trinity
2. Lelele
3. Weatherly

On April 19, the sky threatened, but the wind blew, so 8 boats were approaching the starting line in a snarl of boats dueling for any tactical advantage which might be achieved, when Kato suddenly withdrew, possibly due to damage. No protest was received by the deadline.
The start was clean for a three lap race around two courses within the harbor. Why within the harbor? The outer buoy is still on the beach outside the breakwater…it may be months until we see it properly positioned again (reportedly, the US Coast Guard Buoy Tender is undergoing sea trials after repairs, and has many higher priority tasks ahead).
OZone jumped out to a fast start, maintaining a lead throughout the entire race. Lelele, Speedy, and Bonjolea II fought hard over the remaining two top PHRF places. In the end, OZone, Lelele, and Speedy (in that order) claimed the top three PHRF places. In the Club category, Trinity (who placed second overall in uncorrected time), placed first, with Weatherly collecting second place, and Bonjolea IIfinishing third.

John Bertrand Memorial Rum Series Race #3 results:

PHRF (Open):
1. OZone
2. Lelele
3. Speedy

Club (Open):
