Kato Sails to Strong Win in Race 2 of the Horse and (No) Pony Series

Kato, an Olson 30 skippered by Kevin Millett, took an early lead with a starboard start, and held it uncontested till the end. The rest of the race became a contest to see who would claim 2nd place, corrected, between Bonjolea II, a Sydney 36 skippered by Bonnie Tiffany, who tacked over to port soon after her starboard start to get out of the foul air of the fleet and Fast Company, an Olson 30, skippered by Jim Saylor, who executed a well-timed port start.

As the fleet turn out towards the Windward mark on the first leg, the order was Kato, Bonjolea II, Fast Company, and that order persisted till the end of the race. Order of finish of the top three was Kato, Bonjolea II, Fast Company, but Fast Company corrected out ahead of Bonjolea II in the end.

Other notable features of the race: Weatherly was very well sailed entirely by her increasingly skilled young, mostly female crew as Carl was out of town. OZone, who crossed the line in 4th, provided a bit of amusement for the crowd on the mole as they raised their spinnaker upside down on the 3rd leg, perhaps as a sign of surrender to the top 3 boats? The Wind shifted steadily from NE to ENE and dropped in intensity from 14-17 kts at the start of the race to 10-12 kts at the end of the race.

After corrections were applied, the results were:

PHRF:
1st Place – Kato, corrected time of 1:04:20
2nd Place – Fast Company, corrected time of 1:09:24
3rd Place – Bonjolea II, corrected time of 1:10:27

Club Class results:
1st Place – Speedy, corrected time of1:04:02
2nd Place – Weatherly, corrected time of 1:06:36
3rd Place – Lelele, corrected time of 1:06:37

The skippers, crew & friends were treated to a delicious Pot Luck Heavy PuPu dinner afterwards at the Club.

Conditions: Wind: NE – ENE at 10-15 kts. Swell: Easterly at 1.5M.

Course: A-A-D, 5.91 miles with two long legs & one short leg.

The next NYC Race will be the “Horse and No Pony” #3, to be held Thursday, July 12. The public is invited to watch from the Jetty.
