NYC 17th Annual Father’s Day Keiki Fishing Tournament

NYC 17th Annual Father’s Day Keiki Fishing Tournament

DSC_9388 (3) (1024x614)This year was reported to be another success story. Sea Peterson took over for the day of the event along with the support of Charlotte Ross in charge of the food and drink. I want to thank all the volunteers who were very important in making the community outreach a wonderful day of fun for the children who participated. Sea & Bill Peterson, Charlotte & John Ross, Toni & Ron Wagner, Margaret Bumgarner, Elizabeth & Phil Tanner, Kevin Arndt, Fred Styer, Sherri & Edd Schepker, Liz & Dick Olsen, Tony LeHoven, Jan & Ken Martinez, & Shale Shore “stepped up to the plate & knocked it out of the park” in every area as needed. I knew I could count on their reliability & faithfulness.

Summary of the Day

DSC_9414 (2) (1024x579)What a gorgeous day at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor. The threatening rain held off, the sun was out, there was a cool breeze blowing, and nearly fifty Keiki were out with their parents fishing for the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Father’s Day Keiki Fishing Tournament.

Thanks to the wonderful organization by Bonnie Tiffany and the help of the many dedicated volunteers everything went perfectly!!!

The catch and release worked for most of the fish with only a few ending belly up. The keiki caught everything from tiny crabs to a 21 inch eel, including a puffer fish, and a fish we could not identify. The first fish caught was a fat 11 inch black fish with a thin iridescent blue stripe running along it’s back and yellow on the tips of the pectoral fins. The eel was impressive – literally tying itself into a knot on the pole to escape off the line which shocked both the keiki angler and his father!

DSC_9395 (2) (1024x579)One boy caught at least four fish. We got used to seeing him haul his large bucket over to the judges to have his fish measured. Boys and girls as young as 3 and as old as 13 were out there fishing. Blue canopies and chairs created a festive landscape around the shoreline and jetty.

Both NYC photographers and Dennis Fujimoto from The Garden Island had a great time taking photos.

DSC_9391 (2) (1024x579)At the end of the day every child had received a prize, even the young siblings who hadn’t fished. No one went away hungry or empty handed thanks to our amazing sponsors and their donations. A Big Mahalo goes out to all the sponsors and volunteers who made this event memorable and a great way to celebrate Father’s Day!

Thank you to Sharon Gibson who initiated this event years ago.
