NYC SPRING SHAKEDOWN SERIES

NYC SPRING SHAKEDOWN SERIES

DSC_6545_2_1The first race of the 6 race Spring Shakedown Series was held on 2/13/20 with seven boats competing. It was a beautiful day with milder 6-8 knot winds compared to the strong gusty winds of opening day. Papa A`u was over the starting line early and had to turn around and restart which really cost them some time. Ozone took the lead on the first leg inside the harbor and rounded the Kalapaki buoy first. But on the second leg outside the harbor Fast Company passed Ozone at the breakwater followed by Kato who passed Ozone at the lighthouse buoy by cutting closer inside. DSC_6718_2_1On the downwind leg the boats were pretty much dead downwind heading for the golf course shore. Because of the approaching shore the boats had to throw in a couple of unusual gybes to make it to the Kalapaki buoy. They then raced on to buoy #7 and #11 before heading to the finish line where Fast Company took first place (for the 4th race in a row now!). Kato took second place followed by Ozone in third. DSC_6848_2_1In the club class it was Speedy in first, Weatherly in second and Papa A`u in third. Papa A`u hosted a delicious Valentine’s dinner with an amazing cake for Roger Cable’s birthday.

The second race of the Spring Shakedown Series will be held on 2/20/20 with a 5 pm start. There is one throw out race in this series. The public is invited to watch the race from the Nawiliwili breakwater parking area where they can learn more about the boats and their crews from the race committee.
